Conclusion

MR SID is an underappreciated issue on New Zealand roads. While many people understand that driving while impaired is dangerous, only about fifty per cent of drivers are aware that it is illegal to drive while impaired by medication that is prescribed and/or being used strictly according to directions. 

Nurses and other health professionals can help save lives by opening discussions with patients/clients about their medications and the potential risks. We can work with people to help them self-identify when they might be impaired and to find alternatives that keep themselves and other road users safe.
